Music Theory for the Tone Deaf

The Staff

Modern day music uses five lines called a staff. These lines show a musician the pitch of a note, how high or low it is. They also show the name of the note. Each spot on the staff represents one note name. Move one spot on the staff and you have moved one spot in the musical alphabet.

So if this note is a B:

Then the next note is a C.

If this note is an E:

What is this note?

It’s an F, one spot further in the musical alphabet.

Remember the staff is not a picture of the guitar strings. It doesn’t show were a note can be found on the guitar, that comes later!
